The importance of RV reducer to robots

The robot's first to fourth joints all use RV reducers, and the fifth and sixth joints of light-load robots may use harmonic reducers. All joints of heavy-load robots need to use RV reducers.

The existence of precision reducers enables the servo motor to run at a suitable speed and accurately reduces the speed to the speed required by each part of the industrial robot, improving the rigidity of the mechanical body while outputting greater torque. Compared with general reducers, robot joint reducers are required to have the characteristics of short transmission chain, small size, high power, light weight and easy control.

There are two main types of reducers widely used in articulated robots: RV reducers and harmonic reducers. Compared with harmonic reducers, RV reducers have higher rigidity and rotation accuracy. Therefore, in articulated robots, RV reducers are generally placed in heavy load positions such as the base, upper arm, and shoulder; while harmonic reducers are placed in the forearm, wrist, or hand; planetary reducers are generally used in rectangular coordinate robots.

At the same time, the RV reducer has much higher fatigue strength, stiffness and lifespan than the harmonic transmission commonly used in robots, and the backlash accuracy is stable. Unlike the harmonic transmission, the motion accuracy will significantly decrease as the use time increases. Therefore, RV reducers are often used for high-precision robot transmission in many countries in the world. Therefore, this type of RV reducer has a development trend of gradually replacing harmonic reducers in advanced robot transmission.

CNC machine tool field

A single machining center and CNC milling machine can use more than 4 precision reducers, and CNC lathes and turning centers, digital grinders and EDM machines can use more than 3 precision reducers. At present, high-precision CNC rotary tables and four or five axes of machining centers require 1-2 RV reducers, and the indexing rotary device of engraving machines and denture processing machines also need to use RV reducers.
